Where is all the data?

Unfortunately financial data is not easy to come by. When looking for data (needed for a valuation exercise) we often find ourselves trying to access sites that get us clicking onto links that take us nowhere. This post is therefore dedicated to directing you to free (or otherwise accessible data locations if you are a university student) data sources. This is by no means a complete list of free links and I will be updating this post with further links and data of my own in the future. If you come across anything that I have not mentioned then feel free to contribute.

Aspect Huntley FinAnalysis - This contains 12 years of financial information and is presented in a systematic format controlling accounting changes over the years. It also has a good selection of financial ratios and contains stock price histories. An advantage of this database is that it contains data on de-listed firms.

Morningstar DatAnalysis - A good source of financial information (P&L,B/S) plus corporate actions, market announcements, and business descriptions. It is also free for university students.

Reuters - If you are trying to put together a quick analysis then Reuters offers a very good mix of ratios regarding  growth, dividends, strength, financial stability, liquidity etc... I would be careful in relying on these statistics as no methodology is provided regarding the calculations.

Earnings.com - A good and free website for anyone needing information regarding earnings results against market consensus estimates, dividend payment information (including historical payout, cum/ex-div and record dates).

Yahoo Finance - A very solid all round website. It contains price data (from a Reuters feed), as well as analyst consensus estimates, company profile information and announcements, and company financials.

Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) - This site is useful for downloading information critical to analysing the external environment. Contains information regarding leading indicators, employment figures, growth figures and national accounts.

Capital Research - Pretty good papers on the market risk premium, cost of capital etc.. They claim to supply readers with free data regarding cost of capital and imputation data (i couldn't find it but i'm sure they'd be happy to email it if you asked).

Most people these days have trading accounts and these accounts normally have a good spread of data, from prices to financial accounts. Forums like Hotcopper.com and Aussie Stock Forums from time to time offer a sprinkle of good data and for those focusing on the big picture, the UN publishes some decent outlook statements.
